Johnstone Century all in vain
A glorious century by Iain Johnstone supported in the main by new professional Irwin Iffla took Ayr to a commanding total of 239 for four wickets in their opening game at Glenpark, Greenock. But the Cambusdoon sides failure to dismiss Greenock cost them a grand opportunity of taking the lead in the Western Union Championship - all other matches were abandoned.
Greenock, without a hope catching Ayr after their poor start, were content to play out time with the dim chance that the threatened rain would save the day. The game finished in stalemate with Ayr taking three points and Greenock one.
Though the verdict was disappointing, there was nothing to complain about in Ayr's knock of 239 for four declared. After Denness and Houston had failed in the early stage, Johnstone and Iffla soon knocked the Greenock bowling all over the place. The score when they came together was only 33. When the partnership was broken Ayr 143 for three. Iffla and Johnstone put on 110 in 64 minutes. The 100 partnership went up in four minutes under the hour with a cracking six by Johnstone right out of the Ground.
When Iffla (55) went, bowled by Gray, Johnstone was joined by Moss who was content to let the former do the scoring. Johnstone set about the bowling with renewed vigour and knocked up his second 50 in 35 minutes. the fifty partnership came in 22 minutes. Johnstone's innings of 123 ended after 109 minutes. It included two 6's and eighteen 4's. The fourth wicket partnership had added 98 of which Moss scored only 23 not out.
Greenock's start though solid enough was too slow to catch Ayr and when Gunn departed the scene the shutters went up.
Iffla was the most successful of the Ayr attack taking four wickets for 49 runs.
