Baird Earns Local Cheers
It was more than just Western Union points that were at stake at Cambusdoon today. There was also the matter of local honours. Perhaps that was the reason for such a cheer of joy - or was it relief - when Ayr's Andy Baird stroked the winning runs through the covers to pip Kilmarnock by one wicket.
Baird had a very good afternoon, with bowlers on top. Four for 50 was his contribution in reducing Kilmarnock to 91 all out, but it was pro Marty Haywood who did most of the damage with six for 37.
In the second innings Ricky Toussaint tore out much of the home top order, with Stuart McCall cleaning out the tail - apart from Baird and Nick Lambert.
The Ayr pair came together with 14 runs needed to win and duly provided them.
