Victory opens up title chase
Ayr blew the title race for the Western Union wide open when they defeated league leaders Ferguslie who until then had only been defeated once at Cambusdoon by 46 runs on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and soon had Ayr in trouble as they were reduced to 16-3 before the overseas duo of Michael Papps (45) and Matt Crawshaw (59) staged a recovery which was further helped by a quick fire knock from skipper Scott McElnea (48) as they were eventually bowled out for a respectable 189. The Ferguslie innings got off to a solid start as the openers put on 52 for the first wicket before Michael Papps more usually renowned for his batting skills claimed the first of his five victims Gregor Preston-Jones, followed quickly by Venter and the dangerous Michael English. Ayr’s bowlers then kept chipping away taking regular wickets as they bowled the visitors out for 143, Papps finishing with figures of 5-23.

Ayr win on countback
There was thrilling end to tonight's West League Cup match against Kelburne at Cambusdoon. Chasing the Paisley sides 160-5, Ayr appeared to be on course for victory thanks to an excellent 90 from Scott McElnea and 30 from brother Andi and with the scores tied and needing one run to win off the last two balls lost two wickets, but won on count back having had a higher score at the end of the 19th over.

Rain Stops Play
It was a frustrating afternoon for Ayr on Saturday as rain intervened in their match at home to Dumfries. Batting first they posted 212-7 in their 50 overs with Michael Papps again in superb form scoring 137 off only 146 balls. Only 3.3 overs of the Dumfries innings were possible before a number of heavy showers ended play.

Rowan Cup run ends
Ayr’s interest in this years Rowan Cup came to an end tonight when they lost to East Kilbride at Torrance House. Missing a number of 1st team regulars Ayr batted first and after a promising start from Neil Smith (38) and Matt Crawshaw they struggled to 93-9 in their 20 overs, a total which East Kilbride comfortably reached in 13 overs.

Batsmen struggle at Whitehaugh
Ayr’s recent batting woes continued as fell to defeat away to Kelburne on Saturday. Put into bat on a difficult wicket, most batsmen struggled as they were bowled out for 107, with only Andi McElnea in any decent form as he top-scored with 51. When Kelburne came to bat they found batting equally difficult but managed to creep over the winning line for the loss of seven wickets. Scott McElnea the pick of the bowlers with 3-25, Shujja Khan chipping in with 2-9.

Preswtwick gain revenge
On Wednesday Ayr completed their final game of the section stage of the West League Cup away to Prestwick with the home team gaining revenge for last Saturday’s League defeat as they defended their score of 148-7. Matthew Baines the pick of the Ayr bowlers with 4-16. Ayr got off to good start in their reply as Andi McElnea and Neil Smith put on 50 for the first wicket, but were unable to keep with required run rate as they ended on 132-6

Today saw Ayr host Prestwick at Cambusdoon in the League for the first time in a number of years. Prestwick won the toss and put Ayr in to bat and Kiwi professional Michael Papps (134) continued his fine form this week smashing his second century off only 140 balls as the home team posted 245-8 in their 50 overs. Ross Patterson claiming a hat trick for the visitors with the last three balls of the inning to end with figures of 5-23. In reply some tight Ayr bowling kept Prestwick slightly behind the required run rate, despite 54 from Callum Rodger, but once he departed they required 90 off the last 10 overs and finished on 223-8.

Tonight saw Weirs the visitors in the Rowan Cup match cancelled due to last weeks rain. Weirs won the toss and chose to bat and were bowled out for 154 in the last over of their innings. Andi McElnea with 3-19 and Callum Henderson also with 3-19 were top bowlers. In reply Ayr got off to a flying start with Neil Smith again in fine form as he top scored with 94 and found good support from Matthew McClymont (38 n.o.) as they reached their target in 16 overs.

Victory over Irvine on Wednesday took Ayr a step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages of the West League Cup. Michael Papps was in excellent form again scoring 102 in Ayr’s total 162-1 as he and Andi McElnea (45 n.o.) put on 147 for the first wicket. In reply Irvine were always behind the run rate required and finished on 102-6 in their 20 overs

Wallace puts Ayr to the sword
After yesterdays commanding performance, it was role reversal as Ayr were put to the sword by Forfarshire in the Scottish Cup. The visitors racked up 365-5 with Scotland International top scoring with 165. The Ayr reply got off to a terrible start as Saturday’s centurions Smith and Papps departed with only 5 on the board. Most of the other batsmen made a decent start getting into double figures with only Matt Crawshaw (47) and Matthew McClymont (65) with his first senior fifty troubling the Forfarshire attack as they were eventually bowled out for 206.

After last weeks indifferent performance away to Ferguslie, Ayr got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Stenhousemuir. As with their opening day victory against Drumpellier the foundation was based on an excellent opening first wicket partnership of 215 between Neil Smith and Michael Papps, which had the club statisticians checking to confirm that it was indeed a club record. After reaching 121 Papps was first man out in an innings lasting only 87 balls and included 17 fours and 3 sixes. Matt Crawhaw then joined Smith at the crease and kept the impressive run rate going before the Australian departed for 43, with Smith carrying on, reaching a career best 149 not out at the close of the innings as Ayr finished on 346-2. In reply Stenhousemuir were always behind the required run rate despite a solid 107 from their professional Jappie and finished on 277-6 as Ayr ran out victors by 72 runs.

Wednesday saw the start of the McCulloch Cup campaign with Irvine the visitors. Batting first Ayr scored 184-5, Matt Crawshaw top scoring with 96 not out with Neil Smith adding 37. Irvine were always struggling once the dangerous Sachin Chaudry had been dismissed and they closed on 129-8.
There were two wickets each for Crawshaw and Pushkar Bhandari

Ayr got their 2016 Western Union campaign of to a flying start with a comfortable victory at home to Drumpellier. New captain Scott McElnea won his first toss of the season and elected to bat, with openers Neil Smith and returning Kiwi professional Michael Papps vindicating his decision putting on 156 for the first wicket, before Papps fell six runs short of what would have been his 12th century for the club in an innings that included 16 fours and 2 sixes. On his departure Australian amateur Matt Crawshaw joined Smith at the crease and they put on 100 before Crawsahw was out for 54 and Smith reached his century, finishing on 110 not out as the Ayr innings closed on 283-3.
At the start of the Drumpellier innings, two early wickets from 15 year old Pushka Bhandari, put the visitors on the back foot and behind the required run rate. The Ayr bowlers kept the pressure on, claiming wickets at regular intervals before Scott McElnea returned to clean up the tail as Drumpellier were bowled out for 216, McElnea finishing with figures of 3-35.
